What is a Gastric Band?

A Lap-Band, also referred to as a gastric band, is a flexible silicone band that can be adjusted. It is placed around the top of the stomach with a very small pouch of the stomach above it. The band is connected to an access port that is placed beneath the abdominal wall, this is used to adjust the gastric band. This increases or decreases the amount of control the band has over portion size and appetite.

The gastric band works by controlling appetite and inducing early fullness. When the gastric band is correctly adjusted, patients report that they are less hungry; 24 hours a day they are less interested in food. Gastric band adjustments also makes the patient slow down when they eat as they have to take smaller mouthfuls and chew well.
The Gastric Band is suitable for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 and above with health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. You can calculate your BMI using our online calculator.
Yes, your gastric band can be both adjusted and removed. Gastric band adjustments will usually be done by a clinician and initially will be needed around monthly until the correct adjustment is reached.

After that, less frequent adjustments will be needed to maintain the correct tightness. You can have your band removed if you experience rare complications such as erosion, or perhaps you want to convert to bypass or sleeve surgery or maybe you want it removed due to your personal preference.

It is expected that you will lose around 50% of your excess weight loss in the first year. However, we have found that our patients can lose up to 70%, but this is very much dependent on you as as individual.
