Losing weight isn’t easy. Ineffective weight loss solutions can be disappointing and discouraging. If nothing seems to be working, it might be time to look at weight loss surgery.
With so many procedures and providers out there, where do you start? Why not carry out a bit of research on the types of procedures available, the benefits, risks, cost and what living with the surgery would like.
Today we are taking a closer look at the effectiveness of the Gastric Band.
The gastric band is a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. A few small incisions are made on the abdomen, where your surgeon will use a tiny camera and long, thin medical instruments to operate and navigate. A Gastric Band is placed around the stomach to limit the amount of food that can be eaten in one go. The Lap-Band can be adjusted or removed as needed.
How does the Gastric Band work?
The band works in two ways:
- Firstly, the pouch above the band will hold only a very small volume of food. This allows you to restrict the quantity of food you eat in one meal regardless of how much you ate before.
- Secondly, by sitting around the topmost part of the stomach, it fools your stomach into thinking that there is already food in your tummy. Helping to prevent you from feeling hungry between meals.
Recovery after Gastric Band surgery
It’s important that you take things slowly in the days immediately following your procedure. You should take time to rest and progress at a rate that is comfortable for you. Keeping contact with your support team is important throughout your recovery and beyond.
Effectiveness of Gastric Band surgery
Despite a number of Gastric Band “horror” stories out there it is important to remember the LAP-Band is a powerful tool that needs commitment to ensure it works to its full potential. Weight loss with the Gastric Band had been rigorously tested in clinical trials and has been shown to aid weight loss and can help control type 2 diabetes.
In an audit of our results, including hundreds of patients, Streamline Surgical patients did much better, achieving an average of 65% excess weight loss*. This is probably due to a combination of intense aftercare and good preoperative advice, helping patients to choose the best weight loss surgery for themselves, based on their age, BMI, obesity-related illnesses, diet and lifestyle.
What results can I expect from Gastric Band surgery?
On average:
A 5’5” lady who is 18 stone (8 stone over her ideal weight) will lose about 5 stone, with a long-term weight of about 13 stone.*
Most ladies will reach a size 14 or 16 dress size, some ladies will reach their ideal weight, but this cannot be guaranteed.*
A 5’10 man, who is 22 stone (10 stone over his ideal weight) will lose 6 to 7 stone, with a long-term weight of 15 to 16 stone.*
