Why is aftercare so important after bariatric surgery?

Aftercare post bariatric surgery is important as it ensures not only the initial success of losing weight but provides you with the support and guidance from weight loss experts to help maintain the weight loss long-term. As all types of weight loss surgery result in smaller portions and some affect absorption of vitamins and minerals, aftercare is also important to help reduce the risk of nutritional problems such as vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

At Streamline, we offer different aftercare plans to support your post bariatric surgery. Our aftercare plans include regular dietetic appointments and depending on the plan, access to 121s with your surgeon, psychological reviews, exercise physiology appointments and/or access to a specialist exercise app, supplements and blood tests, which all play a crucial role in your weight loss journey.

After 4 to 6 weeks, it is expected you will be back to normal day to day activities.
After bariatric surgery it is challenging to obtain the necessary amounts of vitamins and minerals from your regular diet in order to stay fit and healthy. Therefore, lifelong use of vitamin and mineral supplementation is recommended after your surgery. The amount and types of supplement varies depending on the procedure, as each is unique. Your dietitian will explain your requirements during your appointments.
Regular follow-up is really important to help support you in your initial recovery as well as adapt to your surgery in the long-term, assist you in a steady and safe weight loss, help you with tools ot maintain your weight loss, and reduce the risk of nutritional problems. At Streamline, we keep in touch with you regularly after surgery at various time points throughout your chosen aftercare plan. However, we recognise that every patient has individual needs, and can adapt your aftercare accordingly.

The aftercare programmes available after gastric sleeve or bypass are the same, but if you have had a gastric band, the aftercare works differently due to gastric band adjustments. You can find out in more detail what our plans offer patients through Streamline Select.

Streamline Select

Having regular, balanced meals, drinking plenty of fluids, having good sleep hygeine, managing stress levels and exercising regularly all have a part to play in maintaining your weight loss in the long-term. These are all discussed regularly with you during your follow-up appointments with the clinical team. It’s important to make the effort to attend all scheduled appointments offered to you throughout your chosen aftercare package to help you to build the necessary tools for long-term success.
