Orforglipron (Foundayo®): the UK’s new once-daily weight loss tablet

There’s a new name in weight loss treatment, and it’s a big one. On Monday 10th August 2026, the UK’s medicines regulator approved orforglipron (brand name Foundayo®) — a once-daily GLP-1 tablet for weight management and type 2 diabetes. It makes the UK the first country in Europe to give it the green light.

It arrives hot on the heels of the Wegovy® oral pill, which launched here in early July. One quick thing to clear up, because it trips people up: orforglipron is not the oral version of Mounjaro®. It’s a separate medication — also from Eli Lilly — developed specifically for managing obesity.

So why the excitement? Injectable treatments like Mounjaro® and Wegovy® have reshaped obesity care over the past few years, but not everyone gets on with needles. Orforglipron is an effective oral alternative — and, as you’ll see, it comes without some of the fiddly restrictions that other tablets ask of you.

So, what is orforglipron?

Orforglipron is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. In plain terms, it mimics a natural hormone — glucagon-like peptide-1 — that your body releases after you eat.

That gentle nudge to your appetite is what does the work. It helps by:

  • Reducing your appetite
  • Helping you feel fuller for longer
  • Taking the edge off hunger
  • Quietening those food cravings

If you have type 2 diabetes, it does something else useful too: it helps keep your blood sugar in check by bringing levels down when they climb too high.

As with every GLP-1 medicine, it works best as part of the bigger picture — alongside a reduced-calorie diet, more movement, and ongoing support. The medication gives you a head start; the habits are what make it stick.

Who’s it for?

Orforglipron is a prescription-only medicine, so a clinician will always assess whether it’s right for you first. In the UK, it’s been approved for adults who have:

  • A BMI of 30 or above (obesity), or
  • A BMI between 27 and 30 (overweight) alongside at least one weight-related condition — such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, or high cholesterol

It’s also been approved to help improve blood sugar control in adults whose type 2 diabetes isn’t well managed. Either way, the starting point is the same: a proper conversation with a qualified healthcare professional about whether it fits you.

How do you take it?

Here’s where orforglipron really stands out. You take one tablet a day — and that’s pretty much the whole instruction.

Unlike some oral GLP-1 medicines, there’s no fasting beforehand, no small sips of water, and no waiting around before your morning coffee. You can take it at any time of day, with or without food.

No fasting. No waiting. No fixed morning routine — orforglipron fits around your day, not the other way around.

For anyone whose mornings are unpredictable, that flexibility is a genuinely big deal.

Starting low, building up

You won’t jump straight to the full dose. Like other GLP-1 treatments, orforglipron starts low and steps up gradually — this gives your body time to settle in and helps keep side effects to a minimum. Here’s how the schedule looks:

StageDaily dose
Starting dose0.8 mg
Step 22.5 mg
Step 35.5 mg
Step 49 mg
Step 514.5 mg
Maintenance dose17.2 mg

You’ll usually stay on each dose for at least a month before moving up, guided by your prescriber and the information leaflet that comes with your treatment.

What about side effects?

They’re much what you’d expect from a GLP-1 medicine, and most people find them manageable. The ones most commonly reported are:

  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion
  • Tummy pain

These tend to show up most when you’re moving up a dose, and usually ease off as your body adjusts. If anything feels severe or won’t settle, don’t tough it out — check in with your healthcare professional.

When can you actually get it?

Here’s the catch: not just yet. Orforglipron has the MHRA’s approval, but it isn’t available through the NHS or privately at the moment.

As with any newly licensed medicine, NHS availability will come down to a future review by NICE and the commissioning decisions that follow. Private availability depends on supply and how the launch is rolled out. In other words — it’s coming, but there’s a bit of a wait.

Prescription-only, for good reason

Orforglipron is a Prescription Only Medicine, which means it can only be supplied by a registered pharmacy after an assessment and prescription from a qualified healthcare professional.

Please steer clear of any website or seller offering GLP-1 medicines without a prescription. Counterfeit and unregulated products are a real and serious health risk — if it seems too easy to buy, that’s the red flag.

Our take

Orforglipron is another proper step forward for anyone living with obesity or type 2 diabetes. A once-daily tablet with no food or water rules is a real win for flexibility, especially if injections were never going to be your thing.

But — and you’ll have heard us say this before — medication is rarely the whole answer on its own. The lasting results come when the right treatment sits alongside real clinical support:

  • A thorough medical assessment
  • Dietitian-led nutrition support
  • Lifestyle and behavioural coaching
  • Exercise guidance
  • Regular clinical reviews
  • Ongoing monitoring and care that’s actually personal to you

The moment orforglipron becomes available in the UK, our clinical team will be all over the latest prescribing guidance, working out exactly how it fits into our clinician-led programmes. We’ll be ready — and we’ll make sure you are too.
