From weight loss surgery to running the London marathon

At Streamline, we are inspired by our amazing patients.

Harbi’s story shows their strength and how motivating they can be.

Harbi had gastric sleeve surgery with us last year and has lost over 10 stone. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength.

Just 16 months after his surgery, Harbi completed the London Marathon.

My fitness journey since surgery

Hi I’m Harbi I am 16 month post gastric sleeve surgery and I’ve just run the London Marathon.

Before the surgery my fitness was really poor it was pretty much non-existent and post-surgery I now have a new lease of life.

I just absolutely love being active, just doing things, taking the stairs, walking long distances again, my 10,000 steps a day in.

So I started my couch to 5K journey last year last April.

I remember running the first 60 seconds and going gosh, I can’t do this to then, completing it, doing the 5K.

And then I ran the Vitality London 10K last September and then signed up for the marathon.

Running the London Marathon

With any long-distance running, you do face mental barriers and that’s usually yourself.

So you really have to push yourself and just believe in yourself and that really builds up your endurance, but also it builds up your mental resilience as well.

There are physical challenges, you will get some injuries along the way, but it’s just about understanding them and following any guidance.

What I’ve learned about myself during this journey is that I am resilient.

I’m able to do whatever I put my mind to, and I’m just super excited for life.

My advice to anyone considering long-distance running

If you’re considering running the marathon post weight loss surgery, I would highly recommend it.

Just give it a go, believe in yourself and you can definitely do it.

Follow all the guidelines, stay hydrated, that’s really, really important and make sure that you get all the right nutrition in and speak to your dietitian at Streamline as well.

Finally, here is what you get at the end.

So do go for it.
