What are you looking for?

Understanding the role of BMI is crucial when considering bariatric surgery as a weight loss solution. BMI measures body fat based on height and weight and plays a significant role in determining eligibility for weight loss surgery. In this blog, we’ll explore what BMI is, how to calculate it, and its role in assessing bariatric surgery.

What is BMI (Body mass index)

According to the World Health organisation, The diagnosis of overweight and obesity is made by measuring people’s weight and height and by calculating the body mass index (BMI): weight (kg)/height² (m²). The body mass index is a surrogate marker of fatness and additional measurements, such as the waist circumference, can help the diagnosis of obesity.

BMI and bariatric surgery eligibility

To be eligible for weight loss surgery, you must meet the following requirements:

NICE and NHS guidelines state that eligibility for obesity treatment, including bariatric surgery, depends on meeting specific BMI criteria:

  • A BMI +35 with other weight-related illnesses such as sleep apnoea, heart conditions or type 2 diabetes; or
  • A BMI + 40 if they do not have additional health-related illnesses.

To qualify for weight loss surgery, a patient needs a BMI over 40 without obesity-related illnesses or over 35 with them. Occasionally, surgeons consider surgery for patients with less weight.

Understanding your BMI category

To better understand the role of BMI in assessing eligibility, here’s a breakdown of BMI categories and their associated health risks:
